Mark Edwards caught a 134-pound catfish at St John's Lake near Witney, believed to be a county record.

Mark Edwards caught a 134-pound Wels catfish at St John's Lake, Linear Fisheries, near Witney, believed to be the largest confirmed in the county. The fish was caught from peg 6, nicknamed 'Catfish Corner', near a patch of underwater weeds.

Edwards used three large halibut pellets on the hook topped with bright pink floating bait, and scattered pellets around the area to attract fish. A spokesperson for Linear Fisheries said the fishery was 'thrilled' to see one of their catfish reaching over 130 pounds. 'I remember when we first stocked cats in the 90s into St John's Pool, and always hoped one day we would see one grow to an impressive size,' the spokesperson added. 'There are now quite a few over 100 lb, so who knows how big they will get!'

St John's Lake is particularly renowned for its Wels catfish, with catches regularly exceeding 70 pounds. The previous confirmed county record was a 124-pound Wels catfish caught by angler Chris Wilkins at the same lake. The largest officially recorded catfish caught in the UK remains a 150 pound 3 ounce Wels catfish landed by Shaun Ing at Chigborough Farm and Fisheries in Maldon, Essex in September 2024.
