Skanda Vale, a Carmarthenshire animal sanctuary, has been awarded £251,545 to install battery storage and public electric vehicle charging points.

Skanda Vale, a Carmarthenshire-based animal sanctuary, has received £251,545 from the latest round of Ynni Cymru funding to install battery storage and public electric vehicle charging points. Seven organisations in west Wales will share £2.75 million in total, part of a wider £8.27 million package set to be awarded to 24 organisations across Wales. The funding aims to help community groups, charities and local energy schemes lower energy costs and reinvest savings into the people and places they serve.

Skanda Vale will use the battery storage and charging points to make better use of the renewable energy it already generates. Earlier funding from Ynni Cymru helped the charity install a wind turbine to complement its existing solar array. Together, the renewable systems have reduced electricity bills from around £1,000 per week to nearly zero, saving more than £40,000 annually.

The charity uses these savings to support free community services including meals, accommodation, retreats and its Bwyd o Skanda food aid project, which distributed 98 tonnes of food through partner organisations in 2025. Around 100,000 people visit the site each year. The new funding will help ensure services can continue during power cuts and extreme weather events. Skanda Vale is home to rescued animals including Asian elephants Valli and Bala.
