Award-winning chef Ruth Hansom raised funds for Horatio's Garden at an event in North Yorkshire to support a new therapeutic garden at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Award-winning chef Ruth Hansom raised funds for Horatio's Garden at an event held at Thorp Perrow Arboretum in North Yorkshire. Guests toured the arboretum, participated in a guided walk with curator Tom Coxhead and a mushroom hunt with fungi expert Dr Keith Thomas, before eating a seasonal lunch prepared by Hansom in the Summerhouse overlooking the lake. Hansom, the recent National Chef of the Year, served beef tacos and vegetable soup and is known for seasonal cooking and championing Yorkshire produce.

Horatio's Garden builds gardens beside NHS spinal injury centres across the UK. The gardens provide patients and their families with calm, company and enjoyment during long, difficult rehabilitation. Dr Olivia Chapple OBE, the charity's founder, said the event's setting highlighted 'why gardens and fresh air are so important for mental and physical health'.

The money raised will support Horatio's Garden projects, including a new garden being developed at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Natasha Ropner, director and owner of Thorp Perrow Arboretum, said the charity's work was 'so important to this area of the country'.
