Matteo Berrettini gave a restrained response when asked about fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti's recent title win, fuelling speculation of a rift.

Matteo Berrettini gave an awkward response during a post-match interview at the ATP 500 Erste Bank Open in Vienna after beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry. When asked whether fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti's recent Lyon Open title serves as 'inspiration', Berrettini initially did not respond, then asked 'Is it live?' before offering a restrained answer through several pauses and awkward laughs. He said 'It's okay. I know he worked really hard to come back and I guess he deserved it' before walking away from the camera.

The incident fuelled online speculation about a rift between the two players. Berrettini, 30, recently unfollowed Musetti on Instagram. Internet rumours alleged that Musetti, who won his first title since 2022, had been involved with Berrettini's ex-girlfriend Vanessa Bellini. The two broke up this summer after nearly a year of dating.

Berrettini and Musetti were teammates on Italy's 2024 Davis Cup-winning squad. In 2025, Musetti declined to make himself available for selection while Berrettini won another tournament title. This year, Berrettini was not selected for Italy's Davis Cup squad. Musetti remains in a relationship with Veronica Confalonieri, with whom he has been together since 2022 and shares two sons.

Vanessa Bellini responded to the cheating rumours in a post written in Italian, denying she betrayed Berrettini.
