Beauty salons boom as they fill gaps in struggling UK high streets

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 12 Oct, 00:24 · Archive

Beauty salons and shops now make up almost a third of all leisure sites across UK retail centres and take an even greater share in smaller high streets as spending on personal care shows no sign of slowing, according to a new report.

The Impact Of Beauty report by Oxford Economics, commissioned by the British Beauty Council and backed by L'Oreal, indicates there are more than 190,000 beauty and personal care sites across the UK, of which 39% are outside large cities. In smaller local centres, the sector makes up more than 35% of local leisure and recreation sites. Hair and beauty salons alone account for around a fifth of leisure sites in smaller high streets, taking the same share as pubs, bars and cafes combined.

Greater London has the highest concentration of salons and beauty shops, with just under 25,000 sites, around 13% of the national total. Greater Manchester and the West Midlands follow with around 8,450 and 7,100 personal care and beauty amenities respectively. On a per-head basis, areas such as Lancashire, Devon and Torbay, and York and North Yorkshire have greater concentrations than Greater London, with more than three beauty and personal-care amenities for every 1,000 residents compared with around two-and-a-half in the capital.
