A young boy left Hillsgrove Primary School in Welling during school hours on Tuesday afternoon.
A young boy, believed to be 6 or 7 years old, left Hillsgrove Primary School in Welling during school hours on Tuesday afternoon. A member of the public, Chelsea Morris, found him running in the road after he ran out in front of her car along Okehampton Crescent shortly before 1pm.
Ms Morris said the boy ran away when she stopped to help him. She decided to chase after him as he repeatedly ran into traffic. 'He nearly got hit several times and so did I,' she said. Ms Morris and another member of the public eventually stopped the boy on Teignmouth Road, more than half a mile from the school, and waited with him until teachers arrived.
Ms Morris said she did not believe the school knew the boy had left the grounds until her friend telephoned them to explain what had happened. When asked whether staff were aware the boy had left before this call, the school refused to comment. Principal Kathryn Laurie said the school has launched an investigation into the incident, describing it as 'extremely serious' and thanking the member of the public who assisted the child.
