Brandon Borrello has been named captain of Western Sydney Wanderers as the club seeks to recover from finishing bottom.

Brandon Borrello, a Socceroo, has been named captain of Western Sydney Wanderers, taking over from goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas on Friday night. The club finished the previous season as wooden spooners and is targeting a return to form as A-League title contenders.

Lawrence Thomas remains part of a six-man leadership group that also includes vice-captains Alex Gersbach and German Ferreyra, as well as Jarrod Carluccio and Anthony Pantazopoulos. In a letter to members, Borrello said the team had discussed not just where it wanted to finish but what it wanted people to see when watching them play. He committed the Wanderers to being a team that works, competes, looks after each other and does not take a backwards step when things get difficult.

Borrello acknowledged the pressure and fear surrounding the role but said the team would embrace those moments rather than pretend they did not exist. Wanderers coach Ufuk Talay said Borrello, who has worn the captain's armband before, led through the way he competes and has a strong personality that demands a lot from himself and those around him. Talay emphasised that leadership could not come from one person and that the six-man group would provide the balance the club needed.
