British walker Karl Bushby completes 28-year journey from South America

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 27 Oct, 17:33 · Archive

Karl Bushby, 57, is returning to Hull after walking from Chile since 1998 without using motorised transport.

Karl Bushby, now 57, began his walk from Chile in 1998 at the age of 28. Over the past 28 years, he has covered approximately 50,000km on foot, crossing some of the world's most dangerous terrain without using any form of motorised transport. His journey included crossing the notorious Darien Gap in Central America and traversing the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia on the frozen sea. The Mirror reports that he has also been cast adrift on an ice floe, attacked by a polar bear and held in a Panama jail during his travels.

Bushby arrived back in England earlier this month and announced that he had swum the English Channel to complete his journey. He reached the North Lincolnshire area by early November and crossed the Humber Bridge with his father and brother before making his final approach to Hull.

A homecoming celebration is planned for Monday, 2 November at Queen Victoria Square in the city centre. The Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull, Maria Coward, invited residents and visitors to welcome him home. She said: 'So many people have followed Karl on his epic journey. We have all felt inspired by his spirit, tenacity and dogged determination to carry on in challenges faced by the most fearless of explorers.' After the public welcome, Bushby is expected to visit his mother's house.
