Muncaster Castle launches treasure hunt for escaped Halloween boggles

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 8 Oct, 17:09 · Archive

Ten creatures inspired by Cumbrian folklore have escaped from Muncaster Castle and are hiding across the county ahead of Halloween.

Muncaster Castle has organised a treasure hunt to find ten shapeshifting creatures known as boggles, which have escaped and are hiding across Cumbria in the lead-up to Halloween. The creatures are inspired by Cumbrian folklore and form part of a seasonal competition.

Clues to the boggles' locations are due to be released at 9am on Saturday, October 10. Sightings have already been reported in ten locations across the county: Ravenglass, Bowness-on-Windermere, Carlisle, Penrith, near Keswick, Workington, Whitehaven, Ulverston, Barrow and Kendal.

Peter Frost-Pennington of Muncaster Castle said: 'Halloween is such a busy time here at Muncaster, the last thing we needed was to be overrun by boggles. That is why we need the public's help in finding them before they can cause too much mayhem.' He added that anyone who finds an escaped boggle would be rewarded with tickets to the castle's spook-tacular Halloween celebrations.

The hunt will continue until all ten boggles have been found. Winners will receive tickets to the Muncaster Halloween Family Festival, taking place during the October half-term. The creatures are part of this year's Halloween Castle Show, titled The Zombie-Boggle Apocalypse, which will feature appearances from 'boggle experts' Ada Twanky and Madam Bridget.

Clues and updates about the hunt will be posted on Muncaster Castle's social media pages. Mr Frost-Pennington has been gathering reports from businesses and organisations across Cumbria to track the creatures' movements.
