Cass County residents learn about proposed data center park

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 14 Oct, 14:32 · Archive

Cass County residents gathered to learn about a proposed 640-acre data center park called Harmony Energy Park.

Cass County residents gathered in Wheatland on Tuesday night to learn about Harmony Energy Park, a proposed data center development by Geronimo Power in Harmony Township. The 640-acre project would include two main data center buildings located off 32nd Street Southeast and 160th Avenue Southeast, with the design keeping buildings at least a mile from any home.

Blake Nixon, CEO and President of Geronimo Power, said the company identified the opportunity after seeing demand from large tech companies. 'We have noticed in our renewable energy business that the data center companies, the large tech companies have been our biggest customers for the past five or six years,' Nixon said. He acknowledged that change can be concerning for communities, noting that Applied Digital is building a data center in nearby Harwood.

Nixon said the existing data center in Harwood, which operates as part of an industrial park, offers both advantages and disadvantages. 'I think being able to see what a data center looks like is actually a really good thing because it's just 10 miles away,' he said, though he noted that the proposed site in rural farmland would present a different aesthetic than an industrial development.

Cass County residents will vote on a building moratorium just over a week away from the Tuesday meeting.
