Firefighters rescue kittens trapped in walls during spring season

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 9 Oct, 09:55 · Archive

Firefighters in Perth rescued kittens trapped in house walls and building crevices as the RSPCA reports increased rescues this spring.

Firefighters in Perth have rescued multiple kittens trapped in difficult locations as spring brings a seasonal surge in kitten rescues, according to the RSPCA. A three-week-old calico kitten was freed from an internal wall cavity at a Queens Park home on Monday after the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and RSPCA inspectors were called following reports of mewing in the roof space. One kitten had already been retrieved by a neighbour, but her sister remained trapped inside the long wall cavity.

RSPCA inspector Amanda McMinn worked with firefighters who spent hours carefully removing bricks to extract the kitten without injury. The rescuers encouraged the kitten to emerge by playing sounds of her sister's meows. 'She was understandably a little overwhelmed after her ordeal, but thankfully she was safe,' Ms McMinn said. The female kittens were named Kiki and Blaiyke after two of their rescuers, Keith and Blake.

Days later, firefighters were called again to rescue four newborn kittens trapped between buildings in Midland at the bottom of a narrow crevice. Specialised equipment was required to free them. Both groups of kittens have been placed in foster care, with the Midland kittens being looked after by a carer experienced with neonatal animals.
