Construction is complete on a 600-megawatt-hour battery storage system in Norfolk designed to store energy from an offshore wind farm.
Ørsted has completed construction of Iceni, a battery energy storage system in Swardeston, near Norwich, next to the A47. The system comprises 170 megapacks, each the length of a classic Routemaster London bus and weighing the same as five buses. It will store energy generated by the Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm, located 75 miles off the Norfolk coast, which is described as the world's largest wind farm.
The system will have a capacity of 600 megawatt-hours, equivalent to the daily power consumption of 80,000 UK homes. The battery storage system is split across two sites, separated by the Hornsea 3 Onshore Converter station and linked by 18 cables each more than 600 metres long. It will be one of the largest systems of its kind in Europe.
Beatrice d'Eufemia, project manager for Iceni BESS at Ørsted, said: 'It's a milestone moment for Ørsted that construction is now complete on our first large-scale battery energy storage system in the UK.' She added that 'the system will make the best use of renewable energy produced in the UK as when electricity generation exceeds demand, the excess can be stored and then used when demand is greater, helping balance the grid, and lower electricity costs for everyone.'
The related Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm is expected to be complete next year at a cost of £8.5 billion and will power more than three million UK homes.
