Cotswolds sports clubs call for new community sports hub
Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 2 Nov, 11:59 · Archive
Sports clubs in Chipping Norton are calling for a new community sports hub to be included in West Oxfordshire's emerging Local Plan. Chipping Norton Cricket Club, Chipping Norton Rugby Football Club, Chipping Norton Swifts Football Club and Chipping Norton Skatepark Trust have all submitted representations supporting the proposed multi-sports hub.
The clubs say the hub would offer much-needed facilities to support the town's future growth and ensure that new housing developments are matched with community infrastructure. Nick Jones, CEO of Chipping Norton Skatepark Trust, said the opportunity was 'much bigger than one individual sports facility'.
'Our clubs are already seeing the consequences of inadequate facilities, with teams folding or merging as young players move elsewhere,' Jones said. 'As Chipping Norton grows, we need to make sure investment in new homes also delivers the facilities our communities need.'
The need for upgraded sports facilities has already led to the loss of teams in the area. Chipping Norton Swifts FC's under-13 boys' team recently folded after losing players to better-equipped clubs. The rugby club's under-15s merged with Shipston-on-Stour to form the Cotswold Lions.
Jones said the clubs had come together behind the vision and land was available. 'What we need now is a clear commitment through the Local Plan, with a route to funding and delivery,' he said.
