Cumbria appoints first High Sheriff Cadet in all-female team

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 20 Oct, 06:19 · Archive

Lucy Forster, 16, has become Cumbria's first High Sheriff Cadet in a newly created role.

Lucy Forster, 16, from Egremont, has been appointed as Cumbria's first High Sheriff Cadet by High Sheriff Shirley Fawcett. The newly-created position was introduced to ensure young people have a voice in the High Sheriff's work across the county, and is expected to become a permanent annual appointment, with a new cadet selected each March.

Ms Forster studies public services at Lakes College in Lillyhall and was named Cumbria Cadet of the Year 2026 at the Citizen in Policing Awards in June. She serves as Head Cadet at the Workington Volunteer Police Cadets unit and joined the cadets at 13. She hopes to pursue a career in policing, inspired in part by family members who work in the profession.

As High Sheriff Cadet, she will accompany Mrs Fawcett to community visits, civic engagements and ceremonial events across Cumbria, representing both the Cumbria Police Cadets and young people across the county. Her first official duties will include attending the Judge's Service at Carlisle Cathedral and taking part in Remembrance events later this year. Her mother said the appointment represents 'a real privilege' for her daughter.
