Cumbrian artist's debut exhibition explores faces and expression

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 22 Oct, 06:08 · Archive

Ophelia Appleby presents her first solo exhibition exploring facial expressions and non-verbal communication in Whitehaven.

Ophelia Appleby, a portrait and figurative painter based in Cumbria, will present her first solo exhibition in Whitehaven next month. The show, titled Mapping Glances: Painting Faces Through the Autistic Lens, opens on November 6 at Gallery 9 on King Street and will run throughout November.

The collection of oil paintings explores what Appleby describes as the 'silent language' of faces, focusing on the subtle expressions, tensions and patterns that can reveal thoughts and emotions. Appleby said: 'I see so much communication in a face, so much information. Human interaction is everything, but it's complicated, no one ever says what they mean, while their faces do.'

Appleby has exhibited widely, including in London, East Sussex and at the Venice Biennale with ProSeed, a collective of Cumbrian artists. She recently won the People's Choice Award at Rheged's Twenty Five and Onwards exhibition.

The exhibition begins with a preview event at 6pm on Friday, November 6. Gallery 9 will then be open to visitors on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 6pm, or by appointment.
