Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has held an awards ceremony to recognise firefighters and support staff who tackled the county's largest wildfire at Dunwich Heath.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service held an awards ceremony at Trinity Park on Wednesday to honour those involved in tackling Dunwich Heath, the county's largest wildfire. The ceremony recognised fire service staff, volunteers, partners, businesses and voluntary organisations who responded to the major emergency in summer.

At its peak, the Dunwich Heath wildfire covered an area of almost 210 football pitches. The response involved 600 firefighters, with all 35 of Suffolk's fire stations deployed to the incident. Support came from 18 external UK fire services and departments. The Clare fire station was named Best Fire Station, and District Command Coordinators Julie Alexander, Sara Gray, Tracey Eales and Abbie McQuitty received certificates of merit.

Jon Lacey, chief fire officer and executive director for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, said the year 'has tested us and demonstrated the very best of our service'. He announced he will retire from the force after more than three decades. Lacey thanked all those continuing to serve Suffolk 'with such commitment and pride'.
