Cardiff City beat Birmingham City 1-0, with the squad inspired by visiting Aberfan on the 60th anniversary of the disaster.

Cardiff City beat Birmingham City 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, with Yousef Salech scoring in the first half. The victory gave Cardiff their third successive home win and their first Championship clean sheet since April.

The match took on special significance as the squad had visited Aberfan on Tuesday during the week marking the 60th anniversary of the 1966 disaster. A coal tip collapsed and engulfed Pantglas junior school, killing 116 children and 28 adults. The match itself began with a minute's silence and a wreath-laying ceremony.

Head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said the visit had left a profound impression on him and his players. He told them it was important they understood the significance of the occasion. 'I had an awareness of what happened there, but I never knew the depth of what went on or what people experienced,' he said after the match. 'While you're there, it's naturally emotionally very difficult because you start to see the gravestones of the people who passed there.' Barry-Murphy wrote in his programme notes that the community had shown 'what coming together means - in the most unimaginable circumstances'.
