Essex police confiscate £1m from convicted drug dealers
Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 25 Oct, 16:28 · Archive
Essex Police have confiscated £1,039,748 in assets from two convicted drug dealers, Simon Renoldi and Iain Green, under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The men were previously jailed for their roles in a large-scale drug supply operation in Essex that used the encrypted messaging service EncroChat to coordinate the distribution of cocaine, MDMA, ketamine and cannabis across the UK.
Following a financial investigation, officers seized cash and highly-valuable assets connected to the suspects. Renoldi had £430,330.41 confiscated whilst Green had £609,417.67 seized.
Mark Finbow, financial investigator with the Proceeds of Crime Team, said the seizure demonstrates that 'crime doesn't pay'. He explained that officers work after criminals are sentenced to ensure they receive no benefit from 'ill-gotten gains'. 'In this case we seized cash and highly-valuable assets connected to the suspects, and painstaking work through collected evidence and financial records showed this could only have come from drug dealing,' he said.
Finbow added that the confiscated funds would be distributed to 'agencies and projects that help people in our county, or even into work to help us stop more criminals'.
The confiscated money will be distributed between His Majesty's Courts, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Home Office, Essex Police and charitable causes through the Essex Community Foundation.
