Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 16 Oct, 13:33 · Archive

Ten children and one adult were taken to hospital after a chlorine leak at a swimming pool in Dublin's Clayton Hotel.

An excess chlorine incident at the Clayton Hotel Liffey Valley in Dublin on 15 October affected swimmers at the hotel's pool. Ten children and one adult were taken to hospital for further evaluation after 23 people reported feeling unwell and received medical assessment.

Dublin Fire Brigade's chief fire officer Greg O'Dwyer told RTÉ the incident was caused by overmixing of chlorine and another chemical in the pool's plant room. There were swimming lessons with 24 children in the pool at the time, along with some parents. A number of children were reported to be suffering respiratory distress and irritation.

Firefighters wearing gas-tight suits entered the scene and isolated the chemical. Dublin Fire Brigade units from across the city, including from Tallaght, Dolphins Barn, Donnybrook and Dun Laoghaire fire stations, attended and set up a decontamination zone. The fire brigade said there was no danger to the wider public. The Dalata hotel group, which operates the Clayton Hotel, closed the swimming pool following the incident and confirmed an inquiry into the circumstances would take place.
