A poll of 2,000 adults found Gen Z view checking-in texts and social media likes as greater signs of care than traditional gestures.

A poll of 2,000 adults has revealed how technology has shaped the way different generations express care. Gen Z view a 'checking in' text or liking a post on social media as a bigger sign of care than traditional gestures such as being made a cup of tea.

The research found stark generational differences in digital expressions of affection. Forty-two per cent of those aged 18-29 show they care by tagging someone in a meme, compared to just four per cent of Boomers. Forty per cent of Gen Z feel technology has had a positive impact on how they express care, but only ten per cent of Boomers agreed.

Despite their reliance on digital communication, Gen Z are also the most likely to make special efforts for their loved ones. Sixty-nine per cent of Gen Z go out of their way to care for others, compared to just 40 per cent of Boomers.

The research was commissioned by AXA Health as part of its Cover that Cares campaign. Heather Smith, CEO of AXA Health, said the findings show 'how much importance Gen Z place on showing they care to the people they love, often through digital means'. She added that 'staying connected is vital' and that 'caring isn't just about grand gestures – it's about staying connected in ways that matter and feel authentic and natural'.
