HS2 Wendover green tunnel reaches major construction milestone

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 9 Oct, 16:44 · Archive

The central section of HS2's mile-long green tunnel at Wendover has been completed, with the two halves of the structure linked for the first time.

HS2 has completed the central section of its mile-long green tunnel at Wendover in Buckinghamshire, marking a significant construction milestone. The cut-and-cover structure, built alongside the A413 to the west of the town, was constructed in two halves to allow different stages of work to happen simultaneously. The tunnel is assembled from 2,740 precast concrete segments and shaped like an 'M', with separate sections for northbound and southbound trains. Once complete, earth will be placed back on top to blend the railway into the surrounding countryside.

The two halves of the tunnel were joined this week when the final segment was slotted into place on Monday, 5 October. Workers marked the achievement by signing the segment before it was lifted into position. HS2 Ltd's Project Manager, Umesh Gorasia said: 'It's great to see the two halves of the tunnel linked up for the first time.'

The next phase of work will focus on completing the portals at either end of the tunnel, finishing the floor slab and internal fitout. Ellesborough Road, which currently runs over the construction site on a temporary bridge, will be realigned over the top of the tunnel once complete, followed by final landscaping work.
