A group of 25 veterans and serving personnel from ten nations are undertaking an endurance challenge in Kenya's Great Rift Valley to raise mental health awareness. The event is organised through the Invictus Games Foundation, the charity patronised by Prince Harry, as part of its recovery programme supporting people in overcoming trauma via sport.

The Mirror reports that participants include British former staff sergeant Jonny Ball, 47, and Ukrainian veteran Vasyl, 34, among the first Ukrainian soldiers trained in the UK. Ball was injured in a motorcycle accident in 2019 which left him with life-changing injuries. He served in the British Army for over twenty years, including in Afghanistan and Northern Ireland, and is due to complete a marathon in Kenya. Vasyl, who has bonded with Ball, has been training with him ahead of the challenge.

Ball said: 'It's not about a time, it's about sharing an achievement with other people. Everyone's got their own reasons and for me it's to prove that you can do stuff that you're told you can't do.' He explained that his connection with Vasyl transcends language barriers, adding: 'We've just shared stories. He's got great English but these experiences transcend any language barriers. And it's the same with the other athletes as well.'
