Summarised from 2 outlets · 3 reports · Updated 28 Oct, 15:42 · Archive

A burglar has been jailed for 43 months after being confronted by a woman during a break-in in Hove.

Jason Knight, 37, from Chailey Road in Brighton, was sentenced to 43 months in prison following a burglary in Waterloo Street, Hove on 28 April. During the break-in, Knight stole several personal items, including a bank card which was later used at nearby shops. He was arrested and charged with burglary and fraud by false representation, then remanded in custody.

Knight appeared at Lewes Crown Court on 26 May, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud. He later pleaded guilty to burglary on 27 October. He was sentenced to 37 months for the burglary and an additional six months for breaching a suspended sentence related to an assault conviction from January 2025.

Two others, Victoria Hayes-Sparkes, 32, of Western Road in Brighton, and Stefan Gilmore, 34, of no fixed address, were charged with assisting an offender. Both failed to appear in court and warrants have been issued for their arrest. Detective Constable James Botting said: 'We understand that the impact of burglaries can be long lasting for victims, not just financially but emotionally too. Sussex Police will continue to investigate any report of burglary, pursuing all reasonable lines of enquiry to hold offenders accountable for their crimes and bringing justice to victims.'
