600 pupils explore STEM careers at Yarm Preparatory School

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 23 Oct, 14:33 · Archive

Around 600 pupils from 12 primary schools in the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire participated in a two-day STEM event at Yarm Preparatory School. The North East STEM Foundation organised the event to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technology experts.

Workshops were delivered by 23 organisations including 3M, AtkinsRéalis, BAM Nuttall, Balfour Beatty, Costain, JBA Engineering, Meldrum Group, Network Rail, Northern Gas Networks, Sir Robert McAlpine and Veolia. Sessions covered hydrogen-powered cars, robotics, space exploration, bridge and tower building using construction kits, binary bracelets and a radiation rescue room. Pupils also tested respirators and masks and carried out experiments on how protective equipment works.

Michelle Henderson, director of foundation development at NESF, said: 'Our aim is to give young people the opportunity to experience STEM in a practical and enjoyable way and show just how many different careers it can lead to.' She added: 'It was fantastic to see so many pupils involved, asking questions and enjoying the challenges. Hopefully, we've sparked an interest that will stay with them long into the future.'

The North East STEM Foundation is calling on more schools and STEM businesses to participate in future events.
