Traffic lights to be installed at deadly Herefordshire crash blackspot

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 9 Oct, 09:55 · Archive

Four-way traffic lights are being installed at High Cross near Upper Sapey in Herefordshire, one of the county's worst crash blackspots.

Four-way traffic lights are being installed at High Cross outside Upper Sapey in Herefordshire, where the B4203 between Bromyard and Worcester meets the B4204 linking Clifton-upon-Teme and Tenbury Wells. The work is part of Herefordshire Council's efforts to tackle what it considers one of the county's worst crash blackspots.

Since 1999, crash data shows one fatal collision, four serious injury crashes and twelve slight injury crashes have occurred at the junction itself, with a further ten recorded within a short distance nearby. Councillor Pete Stoddart, ward member for Bromyard Bringsty, said the crossroads had been a known danger for generations and remained one of the county's biggest road safety concerns despite previous interventions including warning signs, rumble strips and vehicle-activated signs.

The traffic lights installation is expected to be completed between Christmas and March. As part of the wider scheme, the B4203 will also be resurfaced from Upper Sapey village hall through Sapey Common to the Worcestershire border. The junction is ranked as Herefordshire's second-worst crash spot, behind Locks Garage on the A465 at Allensmore near Hereford.
