Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 2 Nov, 15:51 · Archive

A 20-year-old co-pilot who obtained her private pilot's license at 17 has been identified after a Learjet crashed in Florida on Sunday.

The Learjet 60 crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida on Sunday afternoon whilst travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. The aircraft entered a steep nosedive, descending at more than 20,000 feet per minute before hitting the ground.

Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, has been identified as the co-pilot by her mother, Camila, and stepfather, Thiago Corteleti. According to the New York Post, Filgueiras had 1,300 hours of flying experience and had been working as a commercial pilot for nine months. Her stepfather told the Post that she texted her boyfriend ten minutes before the crash, saying 'I've got turbulence, I've got ice.'

Filgueiras obtained her private pilot's license in October 2023 at the age of 17, before she had acquired a driver's license. She grew up in Palm Beach County and had previously spoken about her passion for flying in an interview with CBS12, saying 'I definitely do brag because people say, "Oh, you can't drive," and I'm like, "Yeah, but I can fly."' Her mother said her daughter had been living her dream but that she always knew flying would ultimately take her away from her.
