Western Australian care provider launches $1m free nursing scheme

Nurse Next Door is offering $1 million in free in-home care to vulnerable older Australians who cannot afford support.

Nurse Next Door is providing $1 million of free in-home care to vulnerable older Australians in Western Australia who cannot afford support. The scheme aims to help those who have fallen through gaps in the aged-care system, particularly as hospital ramping worsens and more older Australians struggle to access government support.

Many elderly people are currently going without basic essentials such as showers, meal preparation, personal care and medication management because they lack funding or personal financial resources to pay for private support. Keir Williams, Nurse Next Door Perth's South East managing director, described the situation as a sudden shift for older Australians who need support but cannot access it immediately. 'There's a massive gap in the market, and a lot of those vulnerable clients are going without things like a shower, meal preparation, personal care or medication management,' she said.

Williams noted that whilst many aged-care participants in the community are perfectly safe and healthy and able to manage these tasks at home initially, the system fails this population when circumstances change. The Making Lives Better Million will provide caregivers and nurses to support older Australians struggling to cope at home whilst they wait for government-funded care to be approved.
