Newcastle United play Everton for the second time in five days after losing a Carabao Cup tie at Wembley on Thursday.

Newcastle United play Everton at St James' Park for the second time in five days after losing to them in a Carabao Cup tie at Wembley on Thursday night. Manager Matthias Jaissle has told his squad to turn their frustration into motivation for the Premier League rematch. Newcastle created an incredible 28 goal attempts in the cup match but managed only a single goal, a consolation strike from captain Dan Burn. The game ended with the Magpies brawling with Everton players, with Joelinton and Burn clashing with Jordan Pickford and James Tarkowski.

Jaissle said after the cup loss: 'The frustration needs to be turned into motivation now. We are looking to get revenge on Monday night.' He added that the performance had good aspects but lacked efficiency, with Everton's goals coming from Newcastle errors. A win for Newcastle would move them to seventh place in the Premier League, a point behind Liverpool and two off Chelsea in fourth.

Defender Burn has urged fans to keep faith with Jaissle as he rebuilds the squad with summer signings including Aladji Bamba (£35.5m from Monaco), Sean Steur (£23m from Ajax) and Bazoumana Toure (£43m from Hoffenheim). Burn acknowledged that young players coming to a new country and league need time to adapt, saying: 'It's about us supporting them. As the weeks go by, we're getting more and more from them.'
