The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire is joining a 200-strong delegation to India to attract investment and strengthen trade links.

The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, is travelling to India this weekend as part of a major Northern delegation seeking to attract investment, create jobs and strengthen trade links. About 200 representatives from across the North, including mayors, businesses, universities and leaders from tourism, culture and sport, are participating in the mission, which runs from 11 to 16 October.

The delegation represents the first major regional response to the UK-India Free Trade Agreement, which came into force in July. The mission aims to secure a share of a potential £170 million annual economic boost for Yorkshire and the Humber. Mr Skaith will be joined by fellow metro mayors including Tracy Brabin, Oliver Coppard and Kim McGuinness.

Planned activities include pitching the region's investment opportunities directly to Indian investors and businesses, bringing together Northern and Indian companies for networking, and connecting companies from across the North with potential Indian customers, investors and commercial partners. Mr Skaith highlighted the University of York's new Mumbai campus as evidence of existing strong connections with India, and said the region is ready to showcase its creative industries, bioeconomy research and food and farming innovations.
