The Brookings City Council has approved a land deal to bring a Menards store to the city.

The Brookings City Council voted 7-0 on Tuesday to approve a land transfer paving the way for Menards to build in the city. The resolution transfers 29.5 acres in the Wiese Addition, east of Interstate 29 and north of the Brookings Marketplace development, to the Brookings Regional Growth Alliance, which will then transfer the property to Menard Inc. for development.

Mayor Oepke Niemeyer called it 'big news for Brookings', noting that the decision comes less than two years after the city announced Target and Aldi would locate at Brookings Marketplace. 'Having a third major retailer choose Brookings on the heels of that speaks to the vitality of our community and our region,' he said.

The new store is expected to span around 200,000 square feet. Deputy Mayor Nick Wendell highlighted the economic benefits, stating that when residents shop locally and visitors come to the city to shop, 'we're generating sales tax revenue'.
