Menston breast cancer patient launches free care package project

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 30 Oct, 18:03 · Archive

A Menston woman undergoing breast cancer treatment has launched Join the Huddle to provide free care packages to patients.

Lyn Lyons, a woman from Menston currently receiving breast cancer treatment, has launched Join the Huddle, a new project to provide free care packages to people undergoing the disease. The initiative aims to provide specially tailored care packages for patients at different stages of treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and hormone therapy.

The packages would be distributed directly through NHS hospital care teams, removing the need for patients to apply for support themselves. Join the Huddle is currently in discussions with NHS teams in Leeds as it looks to launch the scheme locally, while also working towards becoming a registered UK charity.

To support the project during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lyons's colleagues at Gusto Research in Roundhay spent October walking, running and cycling a combined 1,000 miles, roughly equivalent to the journey from Leeds to the Outer Hebrides and back. The team initially aimed to raise £1,000, working on the basis of £1 for every mile completed, but the challenge has already exceeded expectations with nearly £3,000 raised so far.

Lyons said the care packages are being developed around the practical needs and comforts that can make a difference at different stages of treatment. She explained that she founded the project following her own breast cancer diagnosis and treatment to help others going through theirs.
