Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 18 Oct, 16:02 · Archive

Over 23,000 people ran the 10-mile Great South Run through Portsmouth on Sunday, starting on the seafront and finishing near Southsea Castle.

The AJ Bell Great South Run returned to Portsmouth on Sunday, with runners starting on the seafront close to the Avenue de Caen and finishing near Southsea Castle. The route took participants past the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Harbour, the dockyard complex and HM Naval Base on a mainly flat 10-mile loop. Participants enjoyed sunny conditions and received specially designed blue and gold medals inspired by the Mary Rose to mark Portsmouth's centenary as a city.

Kadar Omar won the elite men's race, crossing the finish line in 47 minutes 26 seconds, while Hannah Irwin was the fastest elite woman, finishing in 53 minutes 34 seconds. Dale Muffett was the first wheelchair participant to cross the finish line in Portsmouth, finishing in 51 minutes 12 seconds. Olympian Iwan Thomas started the race before changing into his kit and completing the course himself.

The route is one of the world's most popular 10-mile road races and is considered an intermediate distance between 10k and half marathon runs. This was the 35th running of the event, which began in Southampton in 1990. The race was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 and in 2024 due to high winds.
