Motorsport lecturer wins Castle Combe championship for second year

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 10 Oct, 06:15 · Archive

Sam Williams has won the Castle Combe Racing Club Hot Hatch Championship for the second consecutive year.

Sam Williams, a motorsport lecturer at Wiltshire College & University Centre from Melksham, has defended his Castle Combe Racing Club Hot Hatch Championship crown. He won both Class D races at the season finale on Saturday, October 3, driving a Honda Civic EF that was prepared by his students.

Williams said: 'It's amazing to win another championship. I really wasn't expecting it this year, but I got lucky when other competitors had issues. The reliability and consistency of the car is what allowed us to pull it off again.'

Students from the college's Castle Combe centre played a key role in preparing and maintaining the race car, gaining hands-on experience in a real motorsport environment. In the week leading up to the race, they completed work including bleeding the brakes to ensure fresh fluid, carrying out compression checks on the engine and completing general spanner checks.

Williams explained that this type of work forms part of students' degree workshop sessions, where they prepare cars over the winter. During the racing season, students attend the events and work on the cars, gaining practical experience of race day pressures and procedures.

Two college cars competed at the final race meeting, giving students experience of the demands of race preparation and maintenance. Among those involved was 21-year-old James Cox from Bristol, who is in his final year of the BEng (Hons) Motorsport Engineering degree.
