Mountain rescuers called twice after iPhone SOS alerts in Lake District

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 28 Oct, 07:58 · Archive

Mountain rescuers were called out twice after iPhone emergency alerts reported an injured woman near Styhead Pass on Friday, October 23. Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said it was asked to assist Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team after a group triggered a couple of iPhone SOS alerts close to Styhead Pass.

One of the messages reportedly stated that a woman was unable to move because of a hip injury. Eight members of the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team began travelling down Borrowdale to assist with the search. However, Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team then received information indicating the group was at the Styhead stretcher box with its rescuers already nearby, and the Keswick team was stood down.

When Wasdale rescuers reached the stretcher box, the group could not be found. The iPhone emergency centre subsequently provided rescuers with a new location, this time near Taylor Gill Force above Seathwaite. Keswick rescuers set off for a second time to locate the group.

Shortly afterwards, the teams received another update saying the party had reached Seathwaite and no longer required assistance. The Keswick Mountain Rescue Team callout involved eight volunteers and lasted one hour and five minutes.
