A new Nuclear Gateway initiative launched in Whitehaven seeks business ideas to solve UK nuclear decommissioning challenges.
The Nuclear Gateway was launched on 14 October in Whitehaven to help Cumbrian businesses develop solutions for the UK nuclear decommissioning industry. The initiative is run by the Industrial Solutions Hub and supported by the nuclear industry.
The launch event at The Peddler in Whitehaven drew 50 attendees, including small and medium-sized enterprises, start-ups, entrepreneurs, academics and researchers. Craig Branney, head of Nuclear Gateway, led the event and explained the programme's aim to commercialise problems into deliverable solutions.
Gary McKeating, managing director of iSH, said the initiative had two main goals: for local companies and individuals to come up with solutions, and for those solutions to be applied across the industry. He added that over time, companies would grow more confident in working in the nuclear sector and contribute to regional economic growth.
The initial challenge seeks ideas for the identification, mobilisation and removal of solid accumulations in complex process and storage systems. Branney said the difference with the Nuclear Gateway is that solutions would actually be delivered, leading to real regional economic growth.
