Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 22 Oct, 06:08 · Archive

A new documentary tells the story of the 1914 German warship bombardment of the Hartlepools through a Yorkshire family's experience.

The Hartlepools Bombarded is a new documentary about the First World War bombardment of the Hartlepools by German warships on 16 December 1914. Produced by Forge Photography and Film Production Limited, the film explores the human stories behind the attack.

The documentary has strong Yorkshire connections both on and off screen. Maisie Maddison, aged 12 and from Shipley, researched her family's link to the bombardment and introduces audiences to the story of her great-grandmother Annie, who survived the attack as a child. Actress Lily Johnson from York plays a character based on Annie Neacy, Maisie's great-grandmother. Jay Brown, who studied on the MA Media Production programme at York St John University, served as first assistant director.

The original score was composed by York musician Harry Leaf, lead singer of the band Slurp, and was recorded on a baby grand piano at the parish church of St Lawrence in York. Writer and director Mick Child said the project grew substantially during production. What began as a planned 12-minute film, using existing material, expanded to approximately 40 minutes after the Tees Valley International Film Festival offered support and further stories emerged during returns to Hartlepool.
