The NFL suspended Buffalo Bills defensive back Sam Franklin for one game for allegedly spitting at a Raiders opponent.

The NFL announced Wednesday that Buffalo Bills defensive back Sam Franklin has been suspended for one game without pay for allegedly spitting at a Raiders opponent during Sunday's 33-30 win in Las Vegas. The alleged incident occurred after the Raiders' successful extra-point attempt with 1:32 remaining. Franklin denies the allegation and intends to appeal the suspension.

Franklin is the second Bills player disciplined for spitting during the game. Starting safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was also suspended for one game and was ejected after his action was captured by television cameras. After the game, Gardner-Johnson apologized to his teammates and told reporters, 'I'll take my consequences,' while acknowledging he needs to better control his emotions.

Franklin, a special teams player, was not immediately penalized during the game and no video was initially available to show his alleged action. Under the collective bargaining agreement, appeals will be heard by one of four appointed officials: former players Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson or James Thrash, or former coach Ron Rivera. With Buffalo entering its bye weekend at 5-1, the suspensions will begin on 26 October.
