Nic Lentz and Gabe Morales will make their World Series umpiring debuts as part of a crew headed by James Hoye for the matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays, which starts Friday night. Major League Baseball announced the seven-umpire crew on Thursday. Morales will work as the plate umpire for Friday's opener, with Lentz at first base, Hoye at second, Vic Carapazza at third, Dan Bellino in left and Tripp Gibson in right.
It will be the third World Series for both Hoye and Jim Wolf. Bellino, Carapazza and Gibson will each work their second World Series. Lentz, who made his big league debut in 2016, will be the youngest Series umpire since Pat Hoberg in 2022 at 36 years old.
In the first season of the automatic ball-strike (ABS) system, Lentz had a 48.3 per cent overturn rate, ninth-best among 76 umpires with 100 or more challenges. Gibson, Hoye, Lentz and Morales all had perfect ABS records in the Division Series, each upheld on two challenges.
