North Yorkshire better prepared for next major wildfire

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 23 Oct, 14:33 · Archive

North Yorkshire is better positioned to tackle major wildfires following lessons from the Fylingdales blaze.

North Yorkshire would be in a much stronger position to tackle another major wildfire following lessons learned from last year's devastating Fylingdales blaze, according to Mayor David Skaith. Speaking at the National Wildfire Summit in Liverpool, he welcomed a series of new Government measures aimed at improving the country's response to major fires.

The Government announced plans for RAF Chinook helicopters and A400M aircraft to be equipped with specialist firefighting equipment, up to £45 million for wildfire response measures and £25 million for peatland restoration. Restoration work is currently under way at Fylingdales and Langdale Moor following what was one of the largest wildfires ever recorded in the UK.

Mr Skaith said specialist equipment was one of the biggest lessons to emerge from the fire, particularly equipment capable of dealing with challenging terrain and managing fires effectively. He agreed that major fires in North Yorkshire had not always received deserved national attention, endorsing concerns raised by Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume that wildfires did not receive proper attention until they impacted the South. However, he said the Prime Minister had 'taken this incredibly seriously' and authorities were now better prepared should another major wildfire strike.
