Oxford school unveils new orchard and kitchen garden

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 25 Oct, 16:31 · Archive

Barton Park Primary School in Headington has created a new orchard and nursery kitchen garden with help from housebuilder Vistry.

Barton Park Primary School in Headington has opened a new orchard and nursery kitchen garden created in partnership with housebuilder Vistry. The improved outdoor areas formed part of the company's Beckley Place development in Oxfordshire. Children were directly involved in the project, helping to build the new spaces.

The initiative, called 'Operation Groundforce', was designed to engage pupils facing challenges in the classroom by involving them in hands-on construction activities. Vistry and supply chain partners including Aspire Scaffolding, MV Kelly, Mostrim and Renelec donated materials and expertise. Aspire Scaffolding provided boards for the planters, whilst other partners contributed soil, paint and guttering.

Bryony McCraw, headteacher at Barton Park Primary School, said the help demonstrated 'the sheer scale of the help and generosity' from Vistry. She stated that 'our school outdoor areas have been completely revitalised' and that the new nursery kitchen garden was 'being used daily as the children learn to tend to their own vegetables'. McCraw added that she hoped the projects would 'kickstart a wider, school-wide healthy eating curriculum'.
