Oxford woman thanks plasma donors for life-changing treatment

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 25 Oct, 13:02 · Archive

An Oxford woman with primary immune deficiency credits immunoglobulin infusions made from donated plasma with transforming her health.

Jill Jones, 62, from New Marston in Oxford, receives immunoglobulin infusions every three weeks at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The treatment, made from donated plasma, has transformed her health after years of repeated infections and hospital stays. She said the infusions have been 'life-changing' in keeping her well, and before starting treatment she was regularly in hospital with infections.

Ms Jones was diagnosed with primary immune deficiency in 2005 following treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. She had previously been treated for Hodgkin lymphoma at ages 19 and 30, and then for non-Hodgkin lymphoma at 40. Her final round of chemotherapy ended with a stem cell transplant in April 2005. After the transplant, she suffered frequent infections and often needed hospital admission for intravenous antibiotics. Since starting immunoglobulin infusions, she has not needed hospital treatment for infections, except for a short stay with Covid-19 in 2021.

In March 2025, Ms Jones became the first NHS patient to receive immunoglobulin made from UK-donated plasma. She is now encouraging others to consider donating blood or plasma, following the opening of NHS Blood and Transplant's largest-ever donor centre in Reading on 20 October. The centre is the first in the country where people can donate blood, plasma and platelets under one roof.
