A Peoria graphic designer's work has been chosen for a new Arizona specialty licence plate featuring the Grand Canyon.

Peter Malamas, a Peoria-based graphic designer, art director and illustrator, has won the Grand Canyon Conservancy's design contest for a new Arizona specialty licence plate. His design was announced as the winner on Thursday after receiving the most votes in both public online voting and internal judging.

The Grand Canyon Conservancy, the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park, selected Malamas's artwork to represent the national park on the plate. Elizabeth Silkes, CEO of the conservancy, said the organisation was 'impressed by the creativity, talent, and passion demonstrated by the artists who participated in this contest'.

Malamas said he was 'incredibly honored' that his design was chosen, stating: 'Grand Canyon is a place that inspires awe, wonder, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. To have the opportunity to celebrate this extraordinary landscape through my artwork, while helping generate support for its preservation, is truly meaningful.'

The specialty plate is expected to be available to drivers in late 2027. Arizona drivers will be able to purchase it for an additional $25 a year, with $17 from each plate supporting the conservancy's work on conservation, education, cultural preservation and visitor experience initiatives in the park. The Arizona Legislature authorised the new plate in June 2026.
