PM meets Poppy Appeal collectors and armed forces veterans

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 23 Oct, 09:32 · Archive

Prime Minister Andy Burnham welcomed armed forces veterans and Poppy Appeal collectors to his office in Manchester.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has welcomed armed forces veterans and Poppy Appeal collectors to No 10 North in Manchester to mark the start of this year's Poppy Appeal campaign. In a departure from tradition, Mr Burnham made his personal donation at his Manchester office rather than on the steps of No 10 Downing Street.

Among those who met the Prime Minister was six-year-old Ivy Knighton-Leake from Bradford, one of the country's youngest Poppy Appeal volunteers, who collects alongside her parents Kimberley Leake and Steve Knighton. Mr Knighton served six years in the Army and has been supported by the Royal British Legion as he adjusted to civilian life.

Veterans Anthony Coughlan, who suffered life-changing injuries in Afghanistan, former RAF Senior Aircraftwoman Naomi Hall and former Army Captain Laurence Moore also attended. Mr Burnham said: 'This time of year gives us the opportunity to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served, remember those who never came home, and show our gratitude to the entire veterans and armed forces community.'
