Sukany4, a Cumbrian podcast created by Sukanya Nallaiah, has reached listeners in more than 565 cities across 75 countries after two years of walking interviews. The podcast marks its second birthday and launches its fourth season at Rheged, near Penrith, with a screening for guests, listeners and supporters and a move into video.

Sukanya began the project two years ago by inviting people to walk with her and share their stories. She chose to record conversations outdoors rather than in a studio setting, with no scripts. Guests have included entrepreneurs, musicians, artists, community leaders and people who have faced challenges in their lives. Episodes have been recorded in towns, villages, parks and fells across Cumbria.

Sukanya said of the approach: 'Two years ago, I started inviting people to go for a walk and share their stories. Removing the studio, with no scripts, and not chasing the celebrity story. Armed with walking boots, microphones and a curiosity about the lives of the people who make our communities what they are.'

Sukany4 has now produced 37 episodes. The podcast has received recognition through the Independent Podcast Awards 2025 and was named a finalist in the Northern PoWEr Women's Awards 2026.

Sukanya reflected on the project's growth, saying: 'Pretty proud of that as someone who didn't even own microphones, never mind knowing how to create a podcast! What I did have was a pair of walking boots, and a rather ambitious idea!' She added that the project had created a community around the people involved and the stories they had agreed to share.
