Prison officer guilty of contact with inmate through Snapchat

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 9 Oct, 09:19 · Archive

A prison officer exchanged over 5,000 illicit Snapchat messages with an inmate at a maximum security jail.

A sentencing hearing at Birmingham Crown Court heard that Jade Morris, 37, from Holmer, Hereford, had exchanged over 5,000 illicit Snapchat messages with Jerome Nunes, an inmate at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire. Morris pleaded guilty in March to offences of misconduct in public office and encouraging Nunes to use a prohibited device. Nunes, 35, from Newport in south Wales, pleaded guilty at Birmingham Magistrates' Court in February to two offences under the Prison Act 1952 for possessing and using an unauthorised mobile phone.

The inquiry began after Nunes threw a mobile phone out of his cell window in October 2022, leading to the recovery of one of several phones he had used to communicate with Morris, mainly in the early hours. When arrested at her home in January 2023, Morris denied having a relationship with Nunes and described the allegations as 'ludicrous'. She refused to hand over her personal mobile phone, but police seized it and established that a contact stored as 'Ghost' was in fact Nunes. Officers also found approximately 100 WhatsApp messages and 23 files shared between them.

Nunes has 23 previous convictions for 31 offences and was at Long Lartin serving a sentence for a drugs conspiracy offence imposed at Cardiff Crown Court in 2019.
