Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 30 Oct, 15:40 · Archive

Simon Richardson, 35, has been found guilty of murder for hitting and killing Michael Mullins, a 56-year-old headteacher, while cycling.

Simon Richardson, 35, has been found guilty of murder after hitting and killing Michael Mullins, a 56-year-old headteacher. The incident occurred just after 6pm on 20 April as Mr Mullins was cycling home from Stretford Grammar School in Trafford. Richardson drove through a junction, struck Mr Mullins, and failed to stop. He then drove for 2.2 kilometres with Mr Mullins trapped under his car, at times reaching up to twice the speed limit, before Mr Mullins became dislodged on Wet Gate Lane in Lymm.

Rebecca Macaulay-Addison, specialist prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in the North West, said the service decided to pursue a murder conviction because Richardson continued driving despite knowing Mr Mullins was beneath the vehicle. "His decision to continue driving, knowing death or really serious injury was virtually foreseeable, led us to pursue a conviction of murder rather than causing death by dangerous driving," she said. "We were determined to secure justice for Mr Mullins's family, and the jury's verdict holds Richardson accountable for taking his life."

Ms Macaulay-Addison said the verdict would not ease the pain of Mr Mullins's family, the Stretford Grammar School community and his pupils.
