RSPCA overwhelmed by surge in multi-animal rescue cases

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 22 Oct, 06:08 · Archive

The RSPCA in Cambridgeshire is overwhelmed with cases involving multiple animals at single addresses and is appealing for adopters to help.

The RSPCA in Cambridgeshire has issued an urgent appeal for help as it battles rising numbers of 'multi-animal cases', in which rescue teams find dozens or even hundreds of animals at single addresses. Across Cambridgeshire alone, there have been 61 such incidents between January and August. This year, RSPCA frontline officers are dealing with an average of 410 multi-animal incidents nationwide, involving ten or more animals each month, up from the previous record-breaking year of 2025.

Many of the animals rescued from these homes have significant behavioural and medical needs that require rehabilitation. The RSPCA Block Fen Animal Centre currently has several animals waiting for adoption, including cats Arthur and Tizzy and dogs Ronnie, Lulu, Marlon and Posy, all rescued from multi-animal households.

Jo Rowland, chief executive of the RSPCA, said: 'We are struggling and we urgently need help. Our frontline officers are finding dozens, even hundreds of animals in need at single addresses. Animals who have come from homes like this often have behavioural and medical needs, due to the environment they had been living in and need a little more care and understanding.' The charity is appealing for 'extra-special adopters' to take on these animals so rescue teams can continue their work.
