Two Christmas toy appeals have launched in Wiltshire and Swindon to help families struggling with the cost of living provide gifts for children.
Two Christmas toy appeals have launched to help families in Wiltshire and Swindon facing hardship during the festive season. The Salvation Army's Christmas Toy Appeal in Chippenham was officially launched by Mayor Matthew Bragg at the charity's Foghamshire centre. The appeal aims to ensure every child in Chippenham receives a gift on Christmas Day. Last year, the campaign delivered presents to 295 children.
The Swindon Christmas Toy Appeal, now in its 10th year, supports families who may struggle to afford gifts for their children. Last year it helped more than 420 families and reached over 1,050 children, providing each child with three gifts, stocking fillers, a soft toy and a book. With new organisations and schools joining the referral network, organisers expect even greater demand this year.
Cllr Bragg said: "Unfortunately we're coming into a time now where we've got rising fuel prices, rising food prices, and a lot of conflict around the world that's driving these things upwards." He added that some people in Chippenham may face a choice between feeding children well or putting the heating on.
Business support is being sought for both appeals. The Swindon appeal invites businesses to donate new gifts, make financial contributions, become a donation point, encourage employee volunteering or help spread the word. Gifts for the Swindon appeal should be dropped off at donation points by 30 November or sent to the central sorting hub at the Bible Society, Stonehill Green, Westlea, SN5 7DG.
Dawn Prosser, co-ordinator of the Swindon Christmas Toy Appeal, said: "Every gift, donation and share helps us reach more families across Swindon. Together, we can ensure that hundreds of local children wake up on Christmas morning knowing that their community cares about them." Financial donations are welcome and help purchase presents for underrepresented age groups.
