Former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has praised Sunderland's Brian Brobbey as underappreciated, comparing his style to Marco van Basten.
Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has impressed in recent months and attracted considerable praise from former professionals. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has defended Brobbey against criticism, saying he is underappreciated because of his physical style of play. Hasselbaink compared Brobbey's approach to his own, noting that Dutch fans and commentators tend to compare strikers with van Basten, Kluivert and Bergkamp, which does not suit Brobbey's different way of playing.
Brobbey, 24, has scored 10 goals in 38 appearances for Sunderland since joining from Ajax. His performances attracted interest from Manchester United and Italian side Como during the summer transfer window, but Sunderland indicated he was not for sale. He has since been recalled to the Netherlands international squad.
The striker is currently having his game time managed by manager Régis Le Bris after picking up a knock whilst on international duty. Louis Saha and Kevin Phillips have both highlighted Brobbey as a key asset to Sunderland's season.
