Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has returned to Venezuela after more than ten months in exile.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado returned to Venezuela on Sunday after more than ten months in exile. She announced her arrival on social media with the message 'I am here. With you.' Fellow opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez confirmed her arrival, stating he would be with her 'very soon' and calling the day 'very important for Venezuelans'.
Machado had fled the country after being briefly detained following a protest in January 2025. She later reappeared in December in Norway, where she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her peaceful challenge to what the outlets describe as Maduro's authoritarian government.
Venezuela has been governed by acting President Delcy Rodríguez, a longtime ally of former President Nicolás Maduro, since Maduro's ouster. Rodríguez received backing from the Trump administration but has remained in her post beyond the time she was authorised to serve. No election has been scheduled. Machado and her allies have demanded a date for presidential elections, though U.S. officials have emphasised economic stabilisation as a priority.
